The total of 13,948 small and mid-sized businesses sold in California during 20ll represents an increase from the 13,329 deals completed the prior year. But a comparison shows a decline in activity during the last quarter of 2011 vs. the final three months of 2010.

February Stats: Increase In Sold California Small Businesses For Sale

Last Month Set Year's Record for Business Sales

With a total of 1,298 small and mid-sized businesses sold, July was the most active month yet this year. By contrast, there were 1,075 completed deals in July 2009. The prime reason for the volume of transactions last month was the delay in a number of sales scheduled for June closing.

This Month Business Opportunity Sales Decline from Last March

While the number of small and mid-sized business opportunity sales in California last month (1,163) lagged behind the March 2009 total (1356), it's encouraging to notice that this year's figure is ahead of the count for the first quarter of last year. Month to date sales in the state currently stand at 3,239 vs. 3,180 deals closed through March of 2009.

Last Year and Month Show 34% Fewer Business Sales Throughout California

The 14,277 small and mid-sized businesses that changed hands in the state last year represent a 34% decline from 21,689 sales recorded in 2008, and a count of last month's deals, 1,193, also shows a 34% drop when compared to the 1,804 closed escrows in December 2008.
