Joe Robertson with Southern California Business Brokers offers this advise for business owners looking to sell a business:
"Ask for a reference list before you sign a listing agreement When a business owner (seller) is ready to sign a listing agreement with a broker, I recommend that the seller ask for a list of professional references consisting of past clientele. A quality
business broker should be proud to furnish such a list. Once the seller obtains the list he/she must follow through by contacting several of these past clients. The seller should be sure to inquire about the past client’s experience with the broker. It is amazing how honest people will be in describing their experiences. Ask straight forward questions about the quality of the job the broker performed. A good broker will have a solid reputation with his clientele. Remember; when you sign a listing it will usually stipulate a 6 to 12 month commitment. A seller should make a well informed decision that he/she will be confident with over the term of the commitment."
