Some 1,779 small California businesses were sold in July 2008, an increase of 8.7% compared to the 1,637 completed transactions in June 2008.
The boost in the number of completed deals is an encouraging sign that the underlying strength of the demand for small California businesses is starting to prevail over the uncertainty that has affected this market for the past year or so.
But we’re not out of the woods yet, not as long as money is harder to get and some buyers and sellers remain hesitant to move forward. In the month-to-month comparison, there was only one additional business day in July.
Leading the increase were populous counties including Los Angeles, with 407 small businesses sold compared to 347 in June; San Francisco, recording 108 completed deals--more than twice the number (46) for the month before; Orange, with 194 closed escrows in July and 184 in June; and Sacramento, with 57 sold business vs. 51 recorded in June.
Among the populous counties showing declines in sold businesses in July compared with the prior month, were San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino and Santa Clara.
