Buy Car Wash Tips - How To Turn Soap Suds Into Success

Peter Siegel, MBA

Entrepreneurs and small business owners looking to buy a car wash for sale know that this is a strong business capable of generating excellent profits. It is getting harder and harder for people to wash their own cars if they live in the city or in an apartment.

Plus, many towns are also cracking down on the types of car washing products that can be used and absorbed into municipal sewers. These factors are helping to generate more business for car washes and opening more opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to buy a car wash.

Before jumping in to buy a car wash, take stock of your assets and resources; match your capabilities to the following questions.

How Many Employees Do You Want To Take On When You Buy A Car Wash?

There are a number of options when it comes to staffing after you buy a car wash. The automatic rollover car wash requires no operating employees at all; a vehicle pulls into a bay and the washing device completes the entire cleaning process. This type of business greatly simplifies operations since it does not require regular staffing, just periodic maintenance. You can also buy a car wash that is self service which should only require one person to staff the facility at a time.

Tunnel car washes employ a greater number of people. These car washes consist of a conveyor belt that moves vehicles through a building where they are cleaned. It requires at least one attendant to load cars onto the conveyor, another attendant to handle the vehicles as they emerge, and a few employees to staff the facility.

How Much Space Do You Have Available When You Buy A Car Wash?

Tunnel car washes require a significant amount of real estate for the facilities. The tunnels themselves are 100 feet in length and require additional space for equipment and facilities. Self serve facilities often require a similar amount of space. Do you have the land available for a new construction? Are you willing to handle property issues for existing facilities? Do you want to buy a car wash in the city, suburbs, or the country?

When space is an issue, automatic rollover car washes are usually the best answer. Each unit is only the size of a single vehicle and can be situated on small plots or even share space with a gas station or service station.

The answers to these questions will pinpoint exactly what type of facility you should look for when you want to buy a car wash. By following these tips, in no time at all you'll be turning soap suds into a successful, profitable business.
