A decline in the number of small and mid-sized Sacramento County businesses sold last year, compared to 2009 showed some effects of the economic slowdown. Just 403 transactions were completed in 2010, down from the 511 deals closed the year before, according to figures released by the BizBen.com Index. Among the key problems has been the difficulty raising the funds needed to complete deals, as banks have substantially reduced their business lending activities.
There is reason to be optimistic about business sales this year. The SBA lending programs help motivate lenders to provide funds needed for the sale and the expansion of small businesses. Another positive factor is the growing use of seller financing in business sales so that buyers can complete business purchases with a combination of cash and debt.
The BizBen.com Index also reported that the majority of the county’s sales were in the city of Sacramento, with 254 deals recorded last year. Other cities with active business sales were Citrus Heights with 33 closed escrows and Elk Grove with 27.
