There Is Little To No Promotion, So This Makes for An Ideal Place For A New Owner With A Few Promotional Skills To Rev Up The Volume. No promotional skills? Try studing the ads that hit your mail box every week NOT your competitors car wash ads but ads like dry cleaners, grocery store, penny saver, and leaflet ads and try to figure a way to create action... because Action gets Action. Ever go into a completly empty restaurant? Simple stuff really ...not rocket science. Also get your customers email address thru drawings/promotions so you can email them other promotions and specials, etc Just like Staples, Costco, World Market, AT&T, Radio Shack and others. How about an "Unlimited Car Wash Club"? Ever seen it in a car wash? Yes, some do have it and its mostly under promoted...Does this wash have it? Nope! Does this wash do any of the other things I've mentioned above? Nope! In fact, think about it..When was the last time you ever got an email solicitation from your local car wash offering you a buy one get one free offer...or anything else for that matter? In down ecomomies like this, promotion takes innovation...How bout get WEB site?
Some of you out there will, "Get It".... and some of you out there can barely read and understand what I've just written. Some, from both sides, will ultimately get into the car wash industry. Most will make a handsome profit even those in the "dont get it" catagory. Why? Because, you have the financial horsepower to get a wash with a good location, you inherited a good crew/management, and they wash a clean car and you are truly just plain lucky....What does luck have to do with it? Everything.....your lucky that your closest major competitor in your area is not in the, "Get It" catagory! Because he/she will surely kick your AS# over time.
I have one other piece of advice, even if you are in the "Get It" catagory. You need to do one more thing and its probably the most important single thing you can do to increase your car wash volume and profits at the next level and this takes a little time to develop.....YOU NEED TO WASH A CLEAN CAR!!! YOU NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB THAN ALL YOUR COMPETITION!...... DUH? You need someone out there supervising and showing to the help that you care about your customers. If a car seems to you or your foreman to be still dirty, ask the customer if they have the time to rewash it? If they don't... give them a free wash coupon. Rewashing a car costs you pennies and it makes a customer for life and it gives you one more chance to do it right. Your ticket writer is another important man and makes you money and more than pays for himself and much more if he's good (He's your salesman) with just the car volume you currently have. But above all you want.... AND it is an absolute must! that you get your customers to return to you and become a regular customer. Your customer base is flat out your most valuable asset.
I like to compare a car wash customer with a restaurant customer. There looking for the same 3 things. Value, quality, and service. What do you do when you get a bad meal or or rude service at a new restaurnt you've just tried? Most nearly 100% of us are never going to come back to that restaurant. Right? Same with a car wash. Most customers do not complain about the quality of there car wash and they don't want a bunch of lip from an employee or even the owner or manager about the quality of the work...they just simply never come back to you. Unfortunately, it is sometimes a costly lesson in marketing. I say and know all this because before I became a car wash broker I was in the car wash business too. Lessons learned over time.
